Generally, ACS UE Testing services are provided using ultrasound equipment. While there are some cylinders that still require hydro testing, the standards throughout much of the world are moving to ultrasound. Ultrasound has a multitude of benefits which include:
The most comprehensive test
The DOT required ultrasound process measures actual wall thickness along the entire wall of the cylinder as well as searching for horizontal and circumferential cracks and pits.
Ten year requalification on 3AL cylinders
Ultrasound is the only method of testing that is approved by the DOT for a ten year requalification period. While the special permits for ten year testing are issued to the party filling the cylinders, we can perform the ten year test for you if you have an SP.
Ultrasound required on UN cylinders
Type 2 UN cylinders can only be tested using ultrasound.
Valve cost savings
Ultrasound technology doesn’t require valve removal. This means that is is very rare for a valve to become damaged during the process.
A purer process
Ultrasound, unlike hydro testing, does not fill each cylinder with water so no contaminants are introduced into the cylinder.
Reduced water consumption
Ultrasound equipment uses water only as a medium for the sound waves, whereas hydro testing fills each cylinder with water. We typically use only a few gallons of water per week to perform ultrasound.
Ideal for specialty gas
Because the valve is not removed and no contaminates are introduced, specialty gas cylinders can remain in service and be filled immediately after requalification without additional processes.
No internal cleaning needed for SCUBA
Since valves are not removed and no water is introduced, scuba cylinders tested with UE do not need to be internally cleaned after testing.
A faster process with fewer staff
One good ultrasound technician can replace many laborers performing hydro-testing.
